about

These four tracks are brutalist body music. Functional, honest and with a stark, structured industrial aesthetic that leaves you in no doubt as to their purpose.

They work through feelings about the frequently dystopian-seeming world that we live in, one heavily saturated drum loop and sixteenth note bassline at a time.

CW for track 4: graphic descriptions of colonial violence and oppression

Thanks to the people who have encouraged me and to those who have listened to, played or enthused to others about my music. I started doing this just for myself and I am amazed, but very glad, when others are excited by it too.

Some notes on the themes of these tracks, for anyone interested:

Track 1 - This track came about as part of a community challenge to create something using samples of Reagan. While the long shadow cast by Reagan and the Moral Majority reaches all the way to today's culture wars, this track was just intended as something fun. Sometimes there is no deeper meaning, this is one of those times.

Track 2 - Everybody deserves a place where they can feel that sense of freedom or belonging, a place which has meaning for them or that gives them a sense of self. Maybe it's a social space, maybe it's a clearing in the woods, a room at home, or somewhere online. Maybe it's shared with others or a place of solitude. Finding that place means everything and I guess if you're someone buying obscure industrial on Bandcamp, that place may well be music for you, as it is for me.

Track 3 - I'm not trans myself, but the constant grinding transphobic hatred being stoked daily by the media and government here is impossible to ignore. Lies spread and bigotry flares into violence, but too many people just sit by patiently waiting for the next target of institutionalised hatred to be chosen. Trellick is a tiny platform but it's a platform nonetheless and I'll stand on it and yell in your face to equate transphobia with encroaching fascism. The samples in this track are all from The Handmaid's Tale, in case I am not being unsubtle enough.

Track 4 - Growing up middle class white British in the southeast of England, the British Empire was something that I remember being talked about with quiet pride by older people and on TV. Decades later, I'm far more aware of the history of British colonial oppression, violence and atrocities but there's still a right wing establishment outrage machine that tries to retain the warm safe glow and soften the grim truth. This isn't a track about feeling guilt. This is about the simple acknowledgement of what modern Britain is built on, even when records were deliberately destroyed to conceal those bloody foundations. There's a translation of the opening Bengali speech in the track info tab.
